Original artwork by artist Renée Treml, created using a technique known as scratchboard. For this method Renée starts with a board that has been coated with a thin layer of soft white clay, which is painted with black ink. The ink is then scratched away with a fine blade, revealing the white clay beneath.

inspiration:
“Many years ago I lived next to a large expansive forest that provided a home to many owls. My husband and I frequently heard the owls calling at night and sometimes we came upon them during our walks in the woods. When the owner decided to clear cut the forest, I could not help but wonder where all the owls would go. Certainly, no one was building a new forest where they could relocate.

I kept this idea of relocation with me for several years and eventually my lost owls found themselves nesting in teacups. I have added several animals that have become dear to me, including the little blue penguin, frogmouth, roo, frog and koala. All of these animals are finding themselves with less and less habitat each year to call home.”
