About TAMARA RUSSELL

TAMARA RUSSELL
Udessi artist

Textile artist Tamara Russell creates a range of contemporary furnishings, wall art and fashion accessories. Her unique and distinctive textile designs range from cushions, throws and wall art through to greeting cards and jewellery.

Tamara’s interest in Textile Art began whilst still at high school in Australia, where she spent much of her spare time sewing, embroidering, spinning and knitting. Much of her early adulthood was spent travelling through North America, East and Western Europe, Asia, China and the then USSR, Providing her with a great deal of inspiration along the way.

Now living in Canberra, Australia, Tamara continues to create pieces which include photography, applique and freehand machine embroidery.

“I use a combination of photography and machine embroidery in my wall art, in a style unique to me. I specialise in free machine embroidery using the needle as my paint brush and am always exploring new possibilities and ideas. All my machine embroidery work is totally original.”

The materials Tamara uses in her work are mainly silk, 100% Australian wool, linen, or cotton. Many of her pieces also include up-cycled or reclaimed materials. Whenever possible, Tamara prefers to source 100% natural and locally made materials.

“My guiding principles are social harmony and environmental responsibility. It is part of my business ethos to promote low impact environmentally friendly local production and sustainability.”
