Melbourne designer and artist Belinda Kemp from Gretchenmist creates a range of dreamy, abstract works in a variety of different mediums such acrylic paint, pencil and collage. With a background in graphic design and publishing, Belinda says she is mostly drawn to abstract art, although she also loves decorative and illustrative work.

“I've been creating collage and drawings on and off since high school as a hobby really. I was never satisfied in my 'career' jobs so I used to do a little making on the side. I started painting full-time in the few months prior to having my first child and have continued since then whenever I can get some time!”

Belinda generally creates small scale pieces and she enjoys working with mixed media such as acrylics, pencils, paper, wood, glue, linen and block printing. She primarily works on paper, but has recently also started painting on small linen canvases and wood panels.

“I’ve always had a love of art & design, magazines and creating things. Knitting and crochet have resurfaced from childhood. I guess I feel weird if I don't have some type of design/project on the go or at least brewing in my mind.”

Finding the internet a helpful source for creative ideas, Belinda also draws inspiration for her artworks in little details or colours from her surroundings, when she is at home or out walking. “Flicking through interior design magazines and watching my two little boys create is also very inspiring to me.”
